FlatWorld Homework includes an assignment setting that allows students to retry only the questions they answered incorrectly on a previous attempt. This feature helps students focus on concepts they haven’t yet mastered instead of repeating questions they already answered correctly.

1. How Educators Enable the Feature

During Assignment Creation - Step 4, educators will see the checkbox option under Questions Settings. When this option is selected, students will only see previously missed questions on subsequent attempts.

Screenshot of the Questions Settings from FlatWorld Homework. At the bottom a new checkbox is highlighted with an outline. It reads "On subsequent attempts, only give students questions that did not receive full credit on previous attempt(s)

Important notes:

  • If the assignment allows only one attempt, this setting has no effect.

  • Each retry still counts as an attempt.

  • Available attempts are reduced by one for each retry, just like a standard reattempt.

2. What Students See

Students are notified about the retry format only when starting their second attempt. At that point, they’ll see a message explaining that the new attempt will include only the questions they answered incorrectly on the previous attempt:

Screenshot of the "Retry Missed Questions" dialog box. The box reads, "This attempt will only contain questions that you did not answer correctly on your previous attempt. Are you sure you wish to begin an attempt?" followed by "Cancel" and "Begin" buttons.

3. How Grading Works

During a retry attempt, students answer only the questions they previously missed. However, their grade reflects a combined result.

Complete Grade Includes:

  • Points earned on retried questions

  • Points carried over from questions answered correctly on the prior attempt

Assignment Grades Table

In the Assignment Grades Table, educators see the final score (e.g., 100%), which represents the Complete Grade described above.

Details View

When clicking View Details (from the Assignment Grades Table shown above), educators see the student’s full attempt history, just as they normally would.

However, questions carried over from a prior attempt (i.e., not shown during the retry) are marked with an icon and tooltip referencing the earlier attempt.

The same icon and tooltip are visible to students in their Details View.:

4. Questions & Answers

Does this work with Question Variations?

Yes. If Question Variations are enabled, students will receive new variations for the questions they are retrying.

Does this work with Random Question Order?

Yes. If Random Question Order is enabled, questions will still appear in random order during attempts.. Note: In the Assignment Grades Table and Details View, questions are always "un-shuffled" to match the original assignment order, ensuring the at-a-glance "traffic light" view is consistent.

Does this work with Repeat Attempt Penalties?

Yes. If Repeat Attempt Penalties are enabled, they will apply to retry attempts as usual.

What happens after a student answers all questions correctly?

On their next attempt, they will not see the warning. Since there are no "missed" questions, the student will start a fresh, full attempt with all questions.
