How to Use Assignment Retry: Assigning only previously incorrectly answered questions on reattempts

In FlatWorld Homework, we've added a new assignment setting that allows students to retry only the questions they missed on their previous attempt. This feature helps students focus on concepts they haven't yet mastered, rather than repeatedly revisiting questions they already answered correctly.

1. How Educators Enable the Feature

In Assignment Creation Step 4, there is a new checkbox:

Screenshot of the Questions Settings from FlatWorld Homework. At the bottom a new checkbox is highlighted with an outline. It reads "On subsequent attempts, only give students questions that did not receive full credit on previous attempt(s)

Selecting this checkbox will turn on the Retry function, so that on subsequent attempts, students will only see the questions that were answered incorrectly on their previous attempt. If the assignment only permits one attempt, then this setting will not have any effect.

Each retry is considered an attempt, and the available attempts will be reduced by one for each retry, just as they would be for a normal reattempt.

2. What Students See

Students only see a notification about the different retry format when they go to begin their second attempt. At that point, they will see a message explaining that the new attempt will only contain questions that were not answered correctly on the first attempt:

Screenshot of the "Retry Missed Questions" dialog box. The box reads, "This attempt will only contain questions that you did not answer correctly on your previous attempt. Are you sure you wish to begin an attempt?" followed by "Cancel" and "Begin" buttons.

3. How Grading Works

During a retry attempt, the student only receives questions they answered incorrectly on their previous attempt. However, their grade for the retry attempt is combined with their correct answers from the previous attempt.

We present a Complete Grade for the attempt, which includes:

  1. Points earned on the newly answered (i.e. retried) questions

  2. Points carried over from the questions they answered correctly last time (and didn't have to see again)

Assignment Grades Table

In the Assignment Grades Table, where you can see the list of how all students did on each question, users see the final score (e.g., 100%), which reflects the Complete Grade described above:

Details View

When clicking View Details (from the Assignment Grades Table shown above), educators see the history of the student’s attempts, exactly as they are used to:

However, if a question is associated with a prior attempt (i.e. not delivered during a retry), educators see an icon and tooltip referencing the prior attempt:

The above icon and tooltip are also displayed to students in their Details View:

4. Q & A

Does this work with Question Variations?

Yes. On subsequent attempts, if Question Variations are enabled, the student will receive different variations for the questions they are retrying.

Does this work with Random Question Order?

Yes. If Random Question Order is enabled, students will receive questions in a random order, regardless of whether they are retrying. Note: In the Assignment Grades Table and Details View, questions are always "unshuffled" to match the original assignment order, ensuring the at-a-glance "traffic light" view is consistent.

Does this work with Repeat Attempt Penalties?

Yes. If Repeat Attempt Penalties are enabled, they will apply to retry attempts as normal.

What happens after a student answers all questions correctly?

On their next attempt, they will not see the warning. Since there are no "missed" questions, the student will start a fresh, full attempt with all questions.
