Basic View

After completing an assignment you will be able to see your grades. Immediately after submitting an assignment, you will see the word "Calculating" next to your grade. If you click "Details" you will be taken to the grade page.

Screenshot of an assignment page in the FlatWorld Homework tool. The assignment is titled "Assignment 3 - Partial review", and one attempt has been submitted. There is a red box around the word "Details" and an arrow points to it, indicating that clicking on it will take the user to the grade details page.

If you return to the page later or refresh it after a minute or so your current assignment grade will be shown here. If you have made multiple attempts it will either be your highest grade or the grade from your most recent attempt, depending on your instructor's settings.

Clicking on the "Details" button will take you to the basic grades view for the assignment, where you can see your score and a general overview of how you did on the questions.

By default, you will see the grades for each of your attempts and the time when you submitted them:

View Questions

To see which questions you got right or wrong click "View Questions" on the right of the page:

The "View Questions" button has been selected, and basic grade information for each question is visible, showing green checks for correct answers, yellow slashes for partially correct answers, red Xs for wrong answers, and grey slashes for unanswered questions.

You will see one of four different symbols for each question on a given attempt.

At the bottom of the list of attempts, you'll see your average percentage score on each question across all of your attempts, and under that how many times you answered each one.

View Penalties

If your instructor has set penalties for late submissions or for submissions after the first one these will be applied to your grade. If you want to see the breakdown of your score with and without any penalties you can select the "View Penalties" button on the top right of the page.

A screenshot of the grade view of an assignment in FlatWorld Homework. Two attempts are shown, and there is a reattempt penalty of 5% on the assignment which has been applied to the second attempt. The first attempt has a score of 53.4% and the second has a score of 57%. The "View Penalties" option has been selected, and shows that the unpenalized score on the second attempt is 60%.

The 5% re-attempt penalty applied in the image above has been applied to a base score on the second attempt of 60%, resulting in a final score of 57%.

If your instructor has also instituted a late penalty and your assignment is both late and a re-attempt both penalties will be applied.

Detail View

Depending on the settings your instructor has selected you may be able to see a detailed view of your submitted assignment including the answers that you submitted. You can tell if this view is available by whether there is a "View Details" button present under your percentage score on the basic grade page.

Sometimes instructors will set assignments so that students cannot view details at all, sometimes so they can be viewed after a certain date, and sometimes so that they can be viewed immediately upon submission.

In the detail view, you will be able to view your answers and see whether they are correct or not. Depending on your instructor's settings you may only see the answers you gave, or you may also see what the correct answer is and/or any solutions that are provided. (Note: only some books include solutions, and solutions may not be available for every question in a given book.)

You can find out what settings your instructor is using for what you can see at the top of the Detail View:

A screenshot of the top of a detail view of a FlatWorld Homework assignment submission. There words "Submission details" appear at the top of the screen. This is followed by the date and time of the submission. There is a red box around information stating when Correct Answers and Correct Solutions will be available to highlight this information.

Marking of your answers

In the detail view of your submission you will see how many points you received for each answer and whether each part of your answer was correct.

You will see a circle with how many points you received out of the total available for a question on the right of the page. The color of the circle indicates whether you have received full credit (green), partial credit (yellow), or no credit (red).

On each question, the answer you gave will be marked as correct or incorrect. Correct answers are marked with green checks and highlighted in green and incorrect answers are marked with red checks and highlighted in red.

Correct answer:

The question has been answered correctly, and the correct answer is highlighted in green on the screenshot, with a green check on the right of the page. There is a red rectangle around the answer which is highlighted in green and an arrow pointing to the checkmark with the words "Correct answer symbol".

Tip: If all of your answers are marked correct, but you received no credit or only partial credit on the question it is usually a multiple-response question, and you have not selected all the correct answers needed to get full credit.

Incorrect answer:

The circle in the upper right corner is yellow and shows a question score of 0.67/1. A red arrow points to this score. The two correctly selected answers are highlighted with a red rectangle around them, and a third unselected answer is also highlighted.

Tip: If you see multiple answers marked with an X, and you only selected one answer, then one of those is likely a correct answer that you did not select. For more information see Correct Answers.

Partial credit

Screenshot of a multiple choice question on the detail view of a submitted FlatWorld Homework attempt. Two correct answers have been selected and are highlighted in green and have a green checkmark on the right side of the page. The score circle shows 0.67/1 points, and an arrow points to it to highlight the score. The correct answers are highlighted with a red rectangle. A third answer which has not be selected is highlighted with a red rectangle; this answer is correct but has not been selected.

In the above image, you can see that the two selected answers "Brown" and "Red" are correct, but only 0.67 points have been awarded out of an available 1 point. The option "Yellow" has not been selected, but is also correct, resulting in partial credit.

If you have some answers correct and some wrong on a multiple-selection question you will typically only get partial credit, even if you selected all the right answers, as there is a penalty for incorrect answers.

Four answers have been selected and three are highlighted in green with green checkmarks indicating that they are correct. The fourth is highlighted in red with a red X indicating that it is incorrect. The score circle shows 0.67/1 pts.

Graphing Questions

Graphing questions do not give partial credit. Each element that is supposed to be on the page will be marked in green and have a checkmark if it is present, and incorrect elements will be marked in red and have Xs. Some graphing elements look similar to each other, like the end points of segments and points created with the line tool. Make sure to follow the directions in the question carefully.

Because of the extra line segment marked in red in the upper right of the graph above, no credit is given for the question.

Marking of correct answers

Your instructor may set your assignment to show the correct answers to questions you got wrong or only partially correct in the detail view.

Correct answers that you did not select are highlighted in yellow and have a red X on the right of the page. You can see all three kinds of marks, selected correct answers, selected incorrect answers, and unselected correct answers here:

The first answer is unselected and unmarked, the second is selected but highlighted in red with a red X on the right and labeled "Incorrect", the next two are selected and highlighted in green with a check on the right and labeled "Correct", and the last is unselected but highlighted in yellow with an X on the right and labeled "Correct, not selected". The question has a score of 0.33/1.

On some formats of questions, the correct answer may be shown underneath the question with your answer:
